An Introduction to On-Page SEO- Lesson 1

In this lesson, we are going to talk about how to optimize your website for on-page SEO.

On-Page SEO has become extremely important in ranking websites especially since the new Google Algorithm changes. These changes mean that building one -10 page websites will not cut it in the long run. Search Engines are now looking for authority websites.

However, building authority websites starts from the very first time you set up your website. In fact, you should never add content to your website unless you have ensured that your on-page SEO is up to par.

What You Will Learn

  1. How to Inform search Engines Your Websites Exist and new content
  2. How to structure your website correctly
  3. How to Optimize your Pages for maximum results

I will mainly be using WordPress but the techniques can be used for any other type of website. Joomla or simple HTML.

The reason I use wordpress is simple; you can set it up very quickly and that’s important for internet marketing as we shall see later.

This course is part of Building Your Website for SEO series and will form part of our Case Study

Lesson 1

Inform Search Engines that You Exist

It is not enough to build a website and leave it as is. Remember that there are more than 1 million pages being created per minute every day. What makes you think that your site will be the one that is noticed by the searches?

To do this, we are going to use the usual suspects. Bing and Google.

What we need for this:

  1. A Bing Account
  2. A Google Account
  3. Ability to setup sitemaps
  4. Good keyword research

You also need access to your website. That means you have to be the administrator of your website. You can simply ask your web designer to do this for you if you don’t know what this means.

Creating Your Bing and Google Accounts

I shall not go into how to setup Google accounts for you. I’m sure most of you have a gmail account. Make sure you create a new Gmail account for your website project. If you are a web developer, create new ones for all your clients.

Plugins You Need

  •  BWP Google XML Sitemaps
  •  SEO Ultimate
  • NK Google Analytics

Create Webmaster Tools Accounts

In this case we want to create the webmaster tools and Google Analytics accounts for our websites.

Create Google Analytics Account

Create Bing Webmaster Account

Verify Your Accounts

Inform Google that Your Website Exists with Site Maps

Submit Sitemaps

The first thing we need to do is to create site maps for our website. This is very easy to do in WordPress. You can use various plugins but I prefer BWP xml sitemap plugin
